Scary Stories
Subject:
Drama
About unit:
This unit is Drama focused.
The conventions of Freeze Frames, Mime, Slow Motion and Chorus are used. These are be changed to suit your students. The elements of Place, Role, Tension and Situation are highlighted. With the use of Mime, it is a great opportunity to work on the techniques of Facial Expression, Gesture and Posture.
Scene cards and resources have been shared as a PowerPoint to make altering them easier.
This unit could be part of a creative writing unit. Students could take the task a step further and develop plays, sharing and using ideas from a group. There is also an opportunity to develop digital technology skills by students using editing suites, filming themselves or perhaps taking photos to develop a story book.

About unit:
This unit combines Drama, English and Visual Art
Drama - developing ideas on the purpose, function and characteristics of masks in cultural and historical contexts.
English - Reading and interpreting ideas from a story to design and plan a mask. Also exploring the Drama in Context strand about masks. Students will also express their understanding and decisions verbally and/or in written form.
Visual Art - Designing and planning their masks based on what they have read and interpreted. Identify and select appropriate materials, fit for purpose. Students will express their decisions and ideas verbally or in written form.
This unit could be part of a larger reading unit where groups read together, identify main ideas and character traits and looks. Students could take the task a step further and develop plays, using the masks in the performances. Or perhaps using the Frozen Drama unit idea and they retell the stories using Freeze Frames and create it into slideshows.

Subject:
English, Drama
About unit:
This unit combines Digital Technology and Drama.
Drama - developing practical knowledge through character development. Exploring use of body to communicate an idea and create a character.
Digital Technology - manipulating digital technology to achieve a given purpose.
Students get the starter of A/B scripts which give you the words, you decide place and intention. Two A/B scripts are brought together and added to. The end product is recorded, on location or perhaps using green screen. Conventions such as costume, set and props can be introduced and used at your discretion.
This unit works just as well without the digital technology component and the students perform live. The poster attached are ideas that can be focused on, your choice.
A class challenge could be to see how many of their ideas can be used to create something bigger!
