Frozen Drama - Christmas Edition
Subject:

Drama, English and Digital Technology

About unit:

Students use the Drama Convention of Freeze Frames to retell a story or one they have created - all with a Christmas theme. Humorous stories about Christmas shopping, possible mix ups or opening presents around the Christmas tree. For younger students retelling or changing a story my be the challenge.

They support each other and develop ideas individually and/or as a group at various stages.

Drama - introduces and reinforces performance skills and the actors use of body to communicate an idea.

English - developing, sequencing and providing detail to communicate an idea.

Digital Technology - manipulating and using digital technology to achieve an outcome for a given purpose.

There is a level 1/2 plan - use the elements you think will suit your students.

This unit could  develop into larger pieces of writing and digital stories.

Postbox
About unit:

This activity is listed in Games & Activities. It encourages students to work together, initiating, sharing and accepting ideas to develop a scene in a small amount of time. The cards provided have a Christmas twist. They could be used with the Christmas skit cards if students are struggling for ideas.

How to play

  • In small groups students select one card from each post box.

  • The members of the group are given a set amount of time to create a scene that incorporates each of the ideas on the cards individuals have selected.

  • Groups take it in turns to act out their scene. The teacher can place restrictions on the groups, such as mime only/not being allowed to say a word relating to their cards.

  • The audience may be expected to guess the roles or situation.

  • The teacher may score the groups for performance aspects or clarity of communicating the ideas on their cards.

The Post Boxes are generally related to the Elements of Drama - place, role, situation or tension. Emotions and character traits are also good cards.  It is up to the teacher to decide how many post boxes to use at any one time.

Alternatives:

  • Students could create cards and post them in the boxes.

  • Cards could be topic related.

  • One Post Box could be a word that must be used in the correct way during the scene.

Gift stories
About unit:

Students are encouraged to develop stories from the outside in. What might be in this box? Who could have wrapped this present so beautifully? How did you feel when you opened the box?

Long pieces could be created as students create stories around what was in the box.

Write a gift tag for the gift but don't give away what is inside. A bit like the blurb on the back of a book.
