Balloon or strip of fabric

An activity that students can become quite determined to master. It has them working on spatial awareness and control of movement.
Students stand or sit in a circle, or any arrangement you like.
Each has a balloon or strip of fabric. Something that is light and easy to throw into the air, but will not come down with a crash or too fast.
On the teacher's call, to either move left or right, the student tosses the balloon or fabric in the air before moving as directed. The student moving into their spot must catch the balloon or fabric before it hits the ground. If it does hit the ground you are out.
It is important that you discuss the control that is needed with tossing the object.
Variations
Use Te Reo for giving directions.
Depending on the age, the object can be placed on the seat, on the ground etc. Then students are encouraged to move quickly, quietly and with purpose.
A long stick can be used. It would be placed on the ground in front of the students.
