Assorted random objects

This warm up activity can be very entertaining.  Great for the imagination and improvising.

Students sit in a circle.

The teacher places an object in the centre and the students take it in turns demonstrating what the object is, as long as it is not what it really is.

For example: A plate becomes a steering wheel, a hat, headphones.

You can set the class a target number to reach before the object is changed.

OR

With older students they can be asked to justify the object. Place one or maybe two objects in the centre of the circle. As in the online version, you can give where this object has come from and the students need to improvise.

For example: The object is a plate - it comes from the museum.  A justification might be, “Gladiators had shields just like this when they fought to stay alive.”

If you place two objects in the centre of the circle they must be used together.

For example: The objects are a plate and a tennis ball - they come from the museum. A justification might be, “Gold miners used pans like this to search for gold. This is the largest nugget ever found.”

Online

They supply the object, you supply where it has come from.

Ask the students to bring to the lesson an object of their choice. Do not let them know what they will be doing with the object as it will change each time you play the game.

Each student takes it in turns to talk about their object in the specified manner.

For example: It is an artifact from history.

Possible ideas -  It is?

  • An artefact from history

  • A treasured family heirloom.

  • A piece of medical equipment.

  • A tool.

  • A famous piece of artwork.

  • A favourite pet.

  • Something from an alien world.
